#1 - SOREKARA jam build is out at last~๐
After I put out build for this, I immediately flopped on the couch and watched cartoons until 4 am. I didn't crawl off out of bed until 1 pm. And today, I plan to do nothing but eat cereal and watch movies all day. Writing this devlog feels like pulling teeth. I wish only to be lazy now.
Creating this project was a very-in-the-moment thing, as it always is, because I should've really been focusing on finishing Prayers but I suddenly saw a new jam had started and my brain lit fire instantly. I drank a can of UCC coffee and feverishly wrote a 16 page scene-by-scene outline in my robot dinosaur notebook which is falling apart at the seams. I knew the characters very well from the get-go. I knew immediately how it would end, too: with a kiss, a bittersweet goodbye, and a gift slipped into the breast pocket. Perhaps that's a spoiler, but it's really not so much about the destination as it is the journey. I like those sorts of things...
I wrote much of the story out and then rewrote it and then melted and then tried again. The real issue was art. I couldn't get Ros right. I had him in a long, flowing duster at some point, but I inevitably went back to his first look-- Straw hat, patterned scarf, and old coat pushed up to the elbows. I kept pushing art off until last minute, I'm not sure why. But when I started working on various cgs, I got excited because i got to draw so many chicken scratch lines.
Ah...I could talk more.... About various inspirations and the process, but currently my arms are very tired and my mind is wandering. I'll do it another time....yes, please wait for me.....
I wondered somewhere along the way why I keep writing stories about travelers and trains and all that. It's a good story telling device, of course, and trains and trolleys are really cool and nostalgic feeling... But more importantly, these situations leave the characters in a transient state. They are farther than their starting point but haven't reached the end and are effectively homeless and selfless, nothing they come across will last longer than a night. The process of taking and letting go, over and over, leaves you like a sieve. It's an odd purgatory. But even if you won't meet them again, the relationships you make on a journey like that are very powerful. Because both parties know they will never see each other again, they can speak about things they wouldn't normally talk of, and the words are less idle conversation and more like gifts to push you on. Goodbye after things like that feel like they are made to last your whole life. Not just today, but to you, and who you were, from the bottom of their heart. I've had many encounters like that and I remember every single one. I think people wish nothing more than to give gifts to others. It's in our nature.
I said my arm was tired, but then I went off about public transit. Actually, that's all a lie. I just think trolleys are cool and I want to wear a funny hat and pull the whistle.
I don't know when the full release will be but I will be working on this alongside Prayer for the Winter Gears. No more side projects until they're FINISHED! I THINK! I have very bad self control! But it will be done one way or another, and I'll finally give you that wonderful goodbye.
I would like to thank Lankku, who dutifully got me all those sound effects right on time before his trip; Fernand, who cheers me on no matter what; and Sandy, who has been my programmer on these last few projects. He's helped me more than I can say or thank him for and it's made these projects so much better. Thank you for your infinite patience, because of you the world now knows the beauty of ossan โค
And thank you, dear traveler, for reading and playing. Your support makes me very happy. All I want to do is give people a story that makes them feel nice. So I hope that whatever happens, you have a very good day.
